Akaogiite

One of the rarest natural forms of titanium dioxide — a high-pressure polymorph alongside anatase, brookite and rutile.

Intro adapted from Wikipedia (CC BY-SA).

Akaogiite is an IMA-recognized mineral species in the oxides & hydroxide class, with the chemical formula TiO₂.

It crystallizes in the monoclinic crystal system (space group P2_1/c). It is a member of the Baddeleyite structural group.

Key properties: specific gravity 4.72.

IMA symbol Aka, IMA status: approved, named in 2007.

Within multiphase TiO2 clusters enclosed in biotite in heavily shocked garnet- cordierite-sillimanite gneiss in the breccia of a meteorite impact crater.

It is found associated with Rutile, TiO2-II, ilmenite, titanite, graphite.

The mineral was named to honor Masaki Akaogi, Professor at the Department of Chemistry, Gakushuin University, Tokyo, Japan, for his contributions to experimental petrology, calorimetry.
