Akimotoite

A rare magnesium-iron silicate in the ilmenite group — a high-pressure relative of pyroxene and of bridgmanite, Earth's most abundant mantle mineral.

Intro adapted from Wikipedia (CC BY-SA).

Akimotoite is an IMA-recognized mineral species in the silicate class, with the chemical formula MgSiO₃.

It crystallizes in the hexagonal crystal system (space group R-3). It is a member of the Corundum structural group.

Key properties: specific gravity 4.

IMA symbol Aki, IMA status: approved, named in 1997.

Found in shock-metamorphosed melt veins in chondritic L-6 meteorites.

It is found associated with Clinoenstatite (Tenham); ringwoodite, majorite, majorite-pyrope solid solution (Grove Mountains).

The mineral was named to honor Syun-iti Akimoto for his contributions to high-pressure research.
