Allantoin

Allantoin is an IMA-recognized mineral species in the organic mineral class, with the chemical formula C₄H₆N₄O₃.

Key properties: Mohs hardness 1.5; specific gravity 1.72; White streak; Vitreous luster; optically biaxial.

IMA symbol Aan, IMA status: approved, named in 2020.

On rock surfaces as the result of evaporation under the conditions prevailing underground (Rowley mine). In a bat-guano deposit related to an active colony of bats (Kahf Kharrat Najem Cave).

It is found associated with Natrosulfatourea, aphthitalite, urea (Rowley mine); urea, aphthitalite, alunite, biphosphammite-archerite (Kahf Kharrat Najem Cave).

Allantoin is the common name for the organic chemical compound C 4H6N4O3 whose equivalence to the natural material is established by Raman spectroscopy, XRD, and structure analysis.
