Alumovesuvianite

Alumovesuvianite is an IMA-recognized mineral species in the silicate class, with the chemical formula Ca₁₉Al(Al₁₀Mg₂)Si₁₈O₆₉(OH)₉.

It crystallizes in the tetragonal crystal system (space group P4/n). It is a member of the Vesuvianite structural group.

Key properties: Mohs hardness 6.5; specific gravity 3.31; Vitreous luster; optically uniaxial.

IMA symbol Aves, IMA status: approved, named in 2016.

Lining cavities in rodingite (granular diopside) at the contact with host serpentinite. Likely of low-temperature hydrothermal origin (< 350 o C).

It is found associated with Diopside, grossular, prehnite.

As a member of the vesuvianite group with Al3+ as a dominant cation in the Y1 site.
