Ankinovichite

Ankinovichite is an IMA-recognized mineral species in the oxides & hydroxide class, with the chemical formula NiAl₄(V⁵⁺O₃)₂(OH)₁₂·2H₂O.

It crystallizes in the monoclinic crystal system (space group P2_1/n). It is a member of the Chalcoalumite structural group.

Key properties: Mohs hardness 2.5–3; specific gravity 2.48; Vitreous luster; optically biaxial.

IMA symbol Akv, IMA status: approved, named in 2002.

A low-temperature hydrothermal or weathering-derived mineral. As overgrowths оп alvanite in vanadium-bearing schists (Kurumsak); is also found in fractures and as cement in schist fragments within a serpentinite matrix (Mount Kara-Chagyr).

It is found associated with Alvanite, volborthite, carnotite, goethite (Kurumsak); allophone, kolovratite, volborthite, nickelalumite, metatyuyamunite, roscoelite, tangeite.

The mineral was named to honor mineralogist Ekaterina Aleksandrovna Ankinovich (1911-1991) and geologist Stepan Gerasimovich Ankinovich (1912-1985).
