Bafertisite

Bafertisite is an IMA-recognized mineral species in the silicate class, with the chemical formula Ba₂Fe²⁺₄Ti₂(Si₂O₇)₂O₂(OH)₂F₂.

It crystallizes in the monoclinic crystal system (space group Cm). It is a member of the Seidozerite-Bafertisite structural group.

Key properties: Mohs hardness 5; specific gravity 3.96–4.25; optically biaxial.

IMA symbol Bft, IMA status: approved, named in 1959.

Found in hydrothermal veins (Baiyun-Obo deposit, China); in a dike of microcline granite-aplite (Burpala massif, Russia).

It is found associated with Aegirine, fluorite, barite, bastnÄasite (Baiyun-Obo deposit, China).

The name refers to elements in the composition, BArium, iron (FERrum), TItanium, and SIlicon.
