Brackebuschite Locality: Venus Mine, Venus Pb-Zn deposit, Sierra de Córdoba , Córdoba , Argentina ( Locality at mindat.org ) Size: 3.8 x 3.4 x 2.6 cm. A specimen rich with coverage of microcrystallized Brackebuschite, from the type locality. These were found as far back as the 1880s and named after a prominent Argentine mineralogist. There is a lot of descloizite in the material from here. The brackebuschite is in clusters of almost acicular crystals, very minute. Ex. Brackebuschite
Brackebuschite is an IMA-recognized mineral species in the vanadate class, with the chemical formula Pb₂Mn³⁺(VO₄)₂(OH).
It crystallizes in the monoclinic crystal system (space group P2_1/m). It is a member of the Brackebuschite structural group.
Key properties: specific gravity 6.05; Yellow streak; Submetallic luster; optically biaxial.
IMA symbol Bbs, grandfathered status — known before the IMA’s founding, named in 1880.
A rare secondary mineral found in the oxidized zone of hydrothermal Pb–Zn deposits.
It is found associated with Descloizite, vanadinite, wulfenite, cerussite.
The mineral was named to honor Ludwig Brackebusch (1849–1906), Professor of Mineralogy, University of Córdoba, Córdoba, Argentina.
