Braitschite-(Ce)

Braitschite-(Ce) is an IMA-recognized mineral species in the borate class, with the chemical formula Ca₆.₁₅Na₀.₈₅REE₂.₀₈[B₆O₇(OH)₃(O,OH)₃]₄·H₂O.

It crystallizes in the hexagonal crystal system (space group P6/m).

Key properties: specific gravity 2.903; Vitreous luster; optically uniaxial.

IMA symbol Btc-Ce, IMA status: approved, named in 1967.

Found in anhydrite at the contact with sylvite in a thick sequence of marine evaporites, at a depth of about 1 km.

It is found associated with Anhydrite, dolomite, halite, hematite, chalcopyrite.

The mineral was named to honor Dr. Otto Braitsch (1921-1966), University of Freiburg, Freiburg, Germany, for his contributions to evaporate mineralogy and geochemistry.
