Calcioancylite-(Ce)
Calcioancylite-(Ce) is an IMA-recognized mineral species in the carbonate class, with the chemical formula (Ce,Ca,Sr)(CO₃)(OH,H₂O).
It crystallizes in the orthorhombic crystal system (space group Pmmm). It is a member of the Ancylite structural group.
Key properties: Mohs hardness 4–4.5; specific gravity 3.95; White streak; Vitreous, greasy on fractures luster; optically biaxial.
IMA symbol Canc-Ce, IMA status: approved, named in 1922.
A rare mineral, found in late-stage miaroles in granite (Baveno, Italy); in Alpine-cleft type fissures (Cornog, Pennsylvania, USA; Polar Ural Mountains, Russia); in alkaline igneous rocks (Mont Saint-Hilaire, Canada; Ilı́maussaq intrusion.
It is found associated with Potassic feldspar, natrolite, aegirine, catapleiite, perovskite, astrophyllite, titanite, apatite, anatase, synchysite, quartz, calcite, actinolite.
The name refers to its calcium content and from the Greek for curved in allusion to the typical rounded and distorted crystal habit; and for the dominant rare earth element, cerium.
