Chenmingite

Chenmingite is an IMA-recognized mineral species in the oxides & hydroxide class, with the chemical formula FeCr₂O₄.

It crystallizes in the orthorhombic crystal system (space group Pnma).

Key properties: specific gravity 5.27.

IMA symbol Cnm, IMA status: approved, named in 2017.

Formed by solid-state transformation of precursor chromite, near shock-induced melt pockets, under high pressure and high temperature during the Tissint impact event on Mars.

It is found associated with Chromite, xieite, Fe, Cr-rich ulvöspinel.

The mineral was named to honor Ming Chen, a cosmochemist and mineralogist, Guangzhou Institute of Geochemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences, China.
