Cubanite

A bronze-yellow copper-iron sulfide occurring as a minor mineral in magmatic sulfide deposits.

Intro adapted from Wikipedia (CC BY-SA).

Cubanite is an IMA-recognized mineral species in the sulfide class, with the chemical formula CuFe₂S₃.

It crystallizes in the orthorhombic crystal system (space group Pcmn). It is a member of the Cubanite, Wurtzite structural group.

Key properties: Mohs hardness 3.5; specific gravity 4.03–4.18.

IMA symbol Cbn, grandfathered status — known before the IMA’s founding, named in 1843.

Found in hydrothermal deposits formed at relatively high temperature, in pyrrhotite–pentlandite ores in which it is commonly found as intimate oriented intergrowths with chalcopyrite.

It is found associated with Chalcopyrite, pyrite, pyrrhotite, pentlandite, sphalerite.

The name refers to its occurrence in Cuba.
