Dantopaite

Dantopaite is an IMA-recognized mineral species in the sulfosalt class, with the chemical formula Ag₅Bi₁₃S₂₂.

It crystallizes in the monoclinic crystal system (space group C2/m). It is a member of the Pavonite structural group.

Key properties: Mohs hardness 3.5; specific gravity 6.74; Metallic. Anisotropism: Distinct, bluish gray to brownish gray luster.

IMA symbol Dnt, IMA status: approved, named in 2008.

From mineralized (metallic sulfosalts) hydrothermal quartz veins.

It is found associated with Bismuthinite, krupkaite, pavonite, benjaminite, gustavite, heyrovskyite, cosalite, and traces of tetradymite, native gold, pyrite.

The mineral was named to honor Dr. Dan Topa (b. 1955), ore mineralogist and crystallographer, University of Salzburg, Austria, for his work on sulfosalt crystal chemistry and structures.
