Direnzoite

Direnzoite is an IMA-recognized mineral species in the silicate class, with the chemical formula NaK₆MgCa₂(Al₁₃Si₄₇)O₁₂₀·36H₂O.

It crystallizes in the orthorhombic crystal system (space group Pmmn).

Key properties: Mohs hardness 4.5; specific gravity 2.12; White streak; Vitreous to silky luster; optically biaxial.

IMA symbol Drz, IMA status: approved, named in 2006.

Formed by hydrothermal crystallization in the vugs of a highly porphyritic basalt xenolith.

It is found associated with Mordenite, phillipsite, merlinoite, erionite, analcime, chabazite, calcite, aragonite.

The mineral was named to honor Dr. Francesco Di Renzo, (b. 1954), Research Director, Laboratoire de Matériaux Catalytiques et Catalyse en Chimie Organique.
