Falottaite

Falottaite is an IMA-recognized mineral species in the organic mineral class, with the chemical formula MnC₂O₄·3H₂O.

It crystallizes in the orthorhombic crystal system (space group Acaa). It is a member of the Not in a structural group, Oxalate structural group.

Key properties: Mohs hardness 2.5; specific gravity 1.924; White streak; Vitreous. Turns milky white and opaque in a few months, by dehydration to lindbergite MnC2O4·2H2O luster.

IMA symbol Flt, IMA status: approved, named in 2013.

Presumably from reaction of humus and oxalic acids (from plants) with manganese minerals in synsedimentary lenses of manganese ore in radiolaritic rocks of an ophiolithic zone.

The name refers to its type locality, the Falotta mine, Switzerland.
