Fergusonite-(Ce)

Fergusonite-(Ce) is an IMA-recognized mineral species in the oxides & hydroxide class, with the chemical formula CeNbO₄·0.3H₂O.

It crystallizes in the tetragonal crystal system (space group I4_1/a). It is a member of the Scheelite structural group.

Key properties: Mohs hardness 5.5–6.5; specific gravity 5.45–5.48; Adamantine luster; optically uniaxial.

IMA symbol Fgs-Ce, IMA status: questionable, named in 1986.

Found in a carbonatite (Novopoltavsk massif, Russia); in magnesium-rich skarn of the outer granite contact zone of a carbonatite-derived dolomitic marble (Bayan Obo, China).

It is found associated with Magnetite, phlogopite, graphite, chlorite, quartz, pyrite, columbite, allanite, bastnäsite, parisite, apatite, uranpyrochlore, aeschynite, fersmite, monazite.

The name refers to its relation to fergusonite-(Y), and its dominant cerium content.
