Ferripyrophyllite

Ferripyrophyllite is an IMA-recognized mineral species in the silicate class, with the chemical formula Fe³⁺Si₂O₅(OH).

It crystallizes in the monoclinic crystal system. It is a member of the Clay, Pyrophyllite structural group.

Key properties: Mohs hardness 1.5–2; specific gravity 2.97–3.01; optically biaxial.

IMA symbol Fprl, IMA status: approved, named in 1978.

Found on museum specimens.

Presumably for its FERRIc iron content and relation to pyrophyllite.
