Flamite

Flamite is an IMA-recognized mineral species in the silicate class, with the chemical formula Ca₈₋ₓ(Na,K)ₓ(SiO₄)₄₋ₓ(PO₄)ₓ.

It crystallizes in the hexagonal crystal system (space group P6_3).

Key properties: Mohs hardness 5–5.5; specific gravity 3.264; White streak; Vitreous luster; optically uniaxial.

IMA symbol Fmt, IMA status: approved, named in 2013.

Found in Ca- and Al-rich paralava, an ultrahigh-temperature combustion metamorphic rock.

It is found associated with Larnite (partially hydrated), gehlenite, rankinite, Ti-rich andradite, ferrian perovskite, magnesioferrite, hematite, ettringite.

Derived from “flame”, in allusion to the origin of the mineral by ultrahigh-temperature metamorphism from the natural combustion of fossil fuel.
