Fleischerite

A white-to-pink lead-germanium sulfate named in 1960 for IMA co-founder Michael Fleischer.

Intro adapted from Wikipedia (CC BY-SA).

Fleischerite is an IMA-recognized mineral species in the sulfate class, with the chemical formula Pb₃Ge(SO₄)₂(OH)₆·3H₂O.

It crystallizes in the hexagonal crystal system (space group P-62c). It is a member of the Fleischerite structural group.

Key properties: specific gravity 4.2–4.4; Silky in aggregates luster; optically uniaxial.

IMA symbol Fsh, IMA status: approved, named in 1960.

Very rare in an oxidized portion of a dolostone-hosted hydrothermal germanium-bearing polymetallic ore deposit.

It is found associated with Cerussite, anglesite, melanotekite, kegelite, alamosite, mimetite, tennantite, plumbojarosite, itoite.

The mineral was named to honor Dr. Michael Fleischer (1908–1998), mineralogist and geochemist, U.S. Geological Survey, Washington, D.C., USA.
