Fluorcarmoite-(BaNa)

Fluorcarmoite-(BaNa) is a rare phosphate mineral, belonging to arrojadite group, with the formula Ba[]Na2Na2[]CaMg13Al(PO4)11(PO3OH)F2. It is a barium-rich member of the group, as is arrojadite-(BaNa), arrojadite-(BaFe), fluorarrojadite-(BaFe) and an unapproved species ferri-arrojadite-(BaNa). The "-(BaNa)" suffix informs about the dominance of the particular elements (here barium and sodium) at the corresponding structural sites.

Intro adapted from Wikipedia (CC BY-SA).

Fluorcarmoite-(BaNa) is an IMA-recognized mineral species in the phosphate class, with the chemical formula Ba   Na₂Na₂   CaMg₁₃Al(PO₄)₁₁(PO₃OH)F₂.

It crystallizes in the monoclinic crystal system (space group Cc). It is a member of the Arrojadite structural group.

Key properties: Mohs hardness 7.5; specific gravity 3.4; Yellow-orange streak; Vitreous luster; optically biaxial.

IMA symbol Fcm-BaNa, IMA status: approved, named in 2015.

Found in a river pebble derived from phosphate-bearing quartzites.

It is found associated with Quartz, almandine, fluorapatite.

The name refers to Monte Carmo di Loano, the highest peak in the area where the mineral was found.
