Frankhawthorneite

A monoclinic copper tellurate named for University of Manitoba crystallographer Frank Hawthorne.

Intro adapted from Wikipedia (CC BY-SA).

Frankhawthorneite is an IMA-recognized mineral species in the oxides & hydroxide class, with the chemical formula Cu₂Te⁶⁺O₄(OH)₂.

It crystallizes in the monoclinic crystal system (space group P2_1/n).

Key properties: Mohs hardness 3–4; specific gravity 5.43; Pale leaf-green streak; Vitreous luster.

IMA symbol Fht, IMA status: approved, named in 1993.

A very rare secondary mineral formed by the oxidization of primary Cu–Te-bearing sulfides.

It is found associated with Mcalpineite, hematite, acanthite, chrysocolla, connellite, enargite, hinsdalite–svanbergite, pyrite, quartz.

The mineral was named to honor Frank Christopher Hawthorne (1946–), Professor of Crystallography and Mineralogy, University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, Canada.
