Gjerdingenite-Mn

Gjerdingenite-Mn is an IMA-recognized mineral species in the silicate class, with the chemical formula K₂Mn(Nb,Ti)₄(Si₄O₁₂)₂(O,OH)₄·6H₂O.

It crystallizes in the monoclinic crystal system (space group C2/m). It is a member of the Labuntsovite structural group.

Key properties: Mohs hardness 5; specific gravity 2.93; White streak; Vitreous luster; optically biaxial.

IMA symbol Gje-Mn, IMA status: approved, named in 2003.

Found in miarolitic cavities, with little or no late-stage hydrothermal alteration, in a sodic alkaline granite.

It is found associated with Gjerdingenite-Fe, aegirine, albite, elpidite, janhaughite, kupletskite, monazite-(Ce), orthoclase, pyrochlore, ralstonite.

Root name is derived from the nearby Lake Gjerdingen. The suffix -Mn indicates the dominant cation in the D site of the structure.
