Hauckite

Hauckite is an IMA-recognized mineral species in the sulfate class, with the chemical formula Fe³⁺₃Mg₂₄Zn₁₈(SO₄)₄(CO₃)₂(OH)₈₁.

It crystallizes in the hexagonal crystal system.

Key properties: Mohs hardness 2–3; specific gravity 3.02; Yellow to pale yellow streak; Vitreous to slightly pearly luster; optically uniaxial.

IMA symbol Hck, IMA status: approved, named in 1979.

Very rare, found in several different parageneses in a metamorphosed stratiform zinc orebody.

It is found associated with Mooreite, phlogopite, calcite; sussexite, pyrochroite, zincite; chlorophoenicite, calcite;.

The mineral was named to honor Richard Philip Hauck (1935–), mineral collector of Bloomfield, New Jersey, USA.
