Heisenbergite

Heisenbergite is an IMA-recognized mineral species in the oxides & hydroxide class, with the chemical formula (UO₂)(OH)₂·H₂O.

It crystallizes in the orthorhombic crystal system.

Key properties: Mohs hardness 2; specific gravity 5.14; Yellow streak; Vitreous luster; optically biaxial.

IMA symbol Hsb, IMA status: approved, named in 2010.

A secondary mineral formed by weathering.

It is found associated with Quartz, uraninite, billietite, studtite, rutherfordine, joliotite, goethite, hematite, barite (Menzenschwand); uraninite, anglesite, dumontite (Sherana mine).

The mineral was named to honor German physicist Werner Heisenberg (1901-1976).
