Hingganite-(Y)

Hingganite-(Y) is an IMA-recognized mineral species in the silicate class, with the chemical formula BeY(SiO₄)(OH).

It crystallizes in the monoclinic crystal system (space group P2_1/a). It is a member of the Gadolinite structural group.

Key properties: Mohs hardness 5–5.5; specific gravity 4.42–4.57; Vitreous. Optical Class. Biaxial (+) luster.

IMA symbol Hin-Y, IMA status: approved, named in 1981.

Found in a RE, Be-bearing granophyre (Greater Khingan Range, China); in “amazonite"-rich pegmatite in a differentiated alkalic massif (Kola Peninsula, Russia).

It is found associated with Hingganite-(Ce), quartz, potassium feldspar, albite, zinnwaldite, cassiterite, stokesite, fluorite, chlorite, titanite (Tahara area, Japan); aegirine, zircon.

Presumably for the occurrence in the Greater Khingan (Hinggan) Range, China, and predominance of yttrium.
