Honzaite

Honzaite is an IMA-recognized mineral species in the arsenate class, with the chemical formula Ni₂[AsO₃(OH)]₂(H₂O)₅.

It crystallizes in the monoclinic crystal system (space group P2_1/n). It is a member of the Burgessite structural group.

Key properties: Mohs hardness 3; specific gravity 2.993; Pale pink streak; Vitreous luster; optically biaxial.

IMA symbol Hzt, IMA status: approved, named in 2014.

A secondary mineral formed by weathering of nickelskutterudite and tennantite, under strongly acidic conditions, in a Ag+As+Co+Ni+Bi and U vein-type hydrothermal mineral deposit.

It is found associated with Arsenolite, zeunerite, Ni-rich burgessite.

The mineral was named to honor Czech mineralogist and collector of minerals from the Jáchymov ore district, Jan “Honza” Hloušek (1950-2014).
