Karpenkoite

Karpenkoite is an IMA-recognized mineral species in the vanadate class, with the chemical formula Co₃(V₂O₇)(OH)₂·2H₂O.

It crystallizes in the hexagonal crystal system (space group P-3m1). It is a member of the Volborthite structural group.

Key properties: Mohs hardness 3; specific gravity 3.415; Pale yellow-orange streak; Vitreous luster; optically uniaxial.

IMA symbol Kpk, IMA status: approved, named in 2014.

A secondary mineral developed during the post-mining oxidation of corvusite and montroseite in a moist environment at ambient temperatures.

It is found associated with Martyite, quartz, gypsum, barite, roscoelite.

The mineral was named to honor Russian mineralogist Vladimir Yu. Karpenko (b. 1965), an expert on the mineralogy of vanadium.
