Kihlmanite-(Ce)

Kihlmanite-(Ce) is an IMA-recognized mineral species in the silicate class, with the chemical formula Ce₂TiO₂(SiO₄)(HCO₃)₂(H₂O).

It crystallizes in the triclinic crystal system (space group P-1). It is a member of the Tundrite structural group.

Key properties: Mohs hardness 3; specific gravity 3.66; Pale yellowish brown streak; Vitreous, silky in aggregates luster; optically biaxial.

IMA symbol Kih-Ce, IMA status: approved, named in 2012.

Found in a symmetrically-zoned pegmatite vein of arfvedsonite-aegirine-microcline in fenitized metavolcanic rock. Probably the product of low-temperature hydrothermal alteration of rinkite and loparite-(Ce).

It is found associated with Tundrite-(Ce).

The mineral was named to honor Alfred Oswald Kihlman (Kairamo) (1858-1938), a Finnish geographer and botanist, for whom Mt Kihlman and the mineral are named.
