Kojonenite

Kojonenite is an IMA-recognized mineral species in the sulfide class, with the chemical formula Pd₇₋ₓSnTe₂ (0.3 ≤ x ≤ 0.8).

It crystallizes in the tetragonal crystal system (space group I4/mmm).

Key properties: optically uniaxial.

IMA symbol Koj, IMA status: approved, named in 2013.

Found in a sulfide-rich intercumulus segregation in a Pt-bearing zone in a layered mafic igneous intrusion.

It is found associated with Kotulskite, more rarely, intergrown with moncheite and palarstanide as inclusions in chalcopyrite, cubanite, pentlandite, and pyrrhotite.

The mineral was named to honor Kari K. Kojonen (b. 1949), senior research scientist, Bedrock Geology and Resources Group, Geological Survey of Finland.
