Kryzhanovskite

Kryzhanovskite is an IMA-recognized mineral species in the phosphate class, with the chemical formula (Fe³⁺,Mn²⁺)₃(PO₄)₂(OH,H₂O)₃.

It crystallizes in the orthorhombic crystal system (space group Pbna). It is a member of the Reddingite structural group.

Key properties: Mohs hardness 3.5–4; specific gravity 3.31; Yellowish brown streak; Vitreous to dull luster; optically biaxial.

IMA symbol Kry, grandfathered status — known before the IMA’s founding, named in 1950.

A rare low-temperature oxidation product of phosphate minerals in complex granite pegmatites and iron formations.

It is found associated with Sicklerite, triphylite (Kalba Range, Kazakhstan); ferrisicklerite, triphylite (Clementine II pegmatite, Namibia); garyansellite, ludlamite, arrojadite.

The mineral was named to honor Vladimir Il’ich Kryzhanovskii (1881–1947), Russian mineralogist, Curator of the A.E. Fersman Mineralogical Museum, Academy of Sciences, Moscow, Russia.
