Lavoisierite
Lavoisierite is an IMA-recognized mineral species in the silicate class, with the chemical formula Mn²⁺₈[Al₁₀(Mn³⁺Mg)][Si₁₁P]O₄₄(OH)₁₂.
It crystallizes in the orthorhombic crystal system (space group Pnmm). It is a member of the Ardennite structural group.
Key properties: specific gravity 3.576; White streak; Vitreous luster.
IMA symbol Lvo, IMA status: approved, named in 2012.
Found in piemontite-bearing mica schists related to the Alpine tectono-metamorphism of (Mn, Al)-rich sediments.
It is found associated with Quartz, “mica”, sursassite, piemontite, spessartine, braunite, “tourmaline”.
The mineral was named to honor the French chemist and biologist Antoine-Laurent de Lavoisier (1743-1794), one of the fathers of modern chemistry.
