Liebermannite

Liebermannite is an IMA-recognized mineral species in the silicate class, with the chemical formula KAlSi₃O₈.

It crystallizes in the tetragonal crystal system (space group I4/m). It is a member of the Coronadite structural group.

Key properties: specific gravity 3.98.

IMA symbol Lbm, IMA status: approved, named in 2013.

Shock-generated, high-pressure mineral formed via solid-state transformation of primary igneous K-feldspar in a Martian-enriched basaltic shergottite meteorite.

It is found associated with Lingunite, silica, ilmenite, baddeleyite, augite-pigeonite, maskelynite, titanomagnetite (assemblage 1); silica, chlorapatite, baddeleyite (assemblage 2).

The mineral was named to honor Robert C. Liebermann, a high-pressure mineral physicist at Stony Brook University, New York, USA.
