Liraite

Liraite is an IMA-recognized mineral species in the phosphate class, with the chemical formula NaCa₂Mn²⁺₂[Fe³⁺Fe²⁺]Mn²⁺₂(PO₄)₆(H₂O)₂.

It crystallizes in the orthorhombic crystal system (space group Pcab). It is a member of the Wicksite structural group.

Key properties: Mohs hardness 5; specific gravity 3.52; Dark brownish green streak; Vitreous luster; optically biaxial.

IMA symbol Lir, IMA status: approved, named in 2020.

Found in the intermediate zone of a muscovite-rare element-class pegmatite. Formed by reaction of phosphate minerals with Na-bearing hydrothermal fluids.

It is found associated with Varulite, robertsite, fluorapatite, phosphosiderite, Sr-rich metaswitzerite, quartz.

The mineral was named to honor Argentinian mineralogist Dr. Raúl Lira (b. 1956), for his contributions to the knowledge of mineralogy and petrology in Argentina.
