Matyhite

Matyhite is an IMA-recognized mineral species in the phosphate class, with the chemical formula Ca₉(Ca₀.₅   ₀.₅)Fe²⁺(PO₄)₇.

It crystallizes in the hexagonal crystal system (space group R3c). It is a member of the Cerite structural group.

IMA symbol Myh, IMA status: approved, named in 2016.

Found in an angrite meteorite as well-defined domains in association with Fe sulfide near the contact between fayalite-kirschsteinite overgrowth/symplectite and hedenbergite.

It is found associated with Kuratite, ulvöspinel, hedenbergite, Ca and Fe olivine, Fe sulfide.

The mineral was named to honor Professor Ting-Ying Hsüeh Ma (1899-1979), a palaeontologist who pioneered research into relations between coral growth rate, sea-water temperature, paleoclimate.
