Menzerite-(Y)
Menzerite-(Y) is an IMA-recognized mineral species in the silicate class, with the chemical formula (CaY₂)Mg₂(SiO₄)₃.
It crystallizes in the cubic crystal system (space group Ia-3d). It is a member of the Garnet structural group.
Key properties: specific gravity 4.31; n.d. R(air) = 8.83 luster.
IMA symbol Mzr-Y, IMA status: approved, named in 2009.
Occurs as cores and remnants in composite almandine crystals in a felsic granulite.
It is found associated with Almandine.
The mineral was named to honor Gregor Menzer (1897-1989), German crystallographer who solved the garnet structure first and for the dominant rare earth component.
