Murchisite

Murchisite is an IMA-recognized mineral species in the sulfide class, with the chemical formula Cr₅S₆.

It crystallizes in the hexagonal crystal system (space group P-31c).

Key properties: specific gravity 4.22.

IMA symbol Mur, IMA status: approved, named in 2010.

A low-temperature phase (~327 flC in the Cr-S system), probably formed from higher temperature Cr1-xS exsolved or expelled from a Cr-S-bearing.

It is found associated with Low-Ni iron (“kamacite”), martensitic iron, schreibersite, Ca-Al-rich glass, forsteritic olivine (crystal 1); tochilinite, serpentine, chromite.

The name refers to the Murchison meteorite.
