Nagelschmidtite
Nagelschmidtite is an IMA-recognized mineral species in the silicate class, with the chemical formula Ca₇(SiO₄)₂(PO₄)₂.
It crystallizes in the hexagonal crystal system (space group P6_1).
Key properties: specific gravity 3.065; optically uniaxial.
IMA symbol Nsc, IMA status: approved, named in 1942.
Found in a complex assemblage of high-temperature contact metamorphosed sedimentary rocks.
It is found associated with Gehlenite, rankinite, perovskite, titanian andradite, magnetite.
The name refers to Guenther Nagelschmidt, chemist who first reported the synthetic compound in slags.
