Okieite

Okieite is an IMA-recognized mineral species in the oxides & hydroxide class, with the chemical formula Mg₃[V₁₀O₂₈]·28H₂O.

It crystallizes in the triclinic crystal system (space group P-1). It is a member of the Pascoite structural group.

Key properties: Mohs hardness 1.5; specific gravity 2.2; Light orange-yellow streak; Vitreous luster; optically biaxial.

IMA symbol Oki, IMA status: approved, named in 2018.

Secondary, underground on mine walls in roll-front V-U-deposits in sandstone by the oxidation of montroseite-corvusite assemblages in a moist environment.

It is found associated with Dickthomssenite, montroseite, corvusite.

The mineral was named to honor Craig (‘‘Okie’’) Howell (b. 1963) of Naturita, Colorado, USA, who was instrumental in the discovery of several new mineral species at the Burro, Blue Streak.
