Paratobermorite

Paratobermorite is an IMA-recognized mineral species in the silicate class, with the chemical formula Ca₄(Al₀.₅Si₀.₅)₂Si₄O₁₆(OH)(H₂O)₂·(Ca·3H₂O).

It crystallizes in the monoclinic crystal system. It is a member of the Tobermorite structural group.

Key properties: Mohs hardness 3.5; specific gravity 2.51; White streak; Vitreous luster; optically biaxial.

IMA status: approved, named in 2021.

Found in a chrysotile asbestos deposit in grossular rhodingite.

It is found associated with Prehnite, pectolite, thomsonite-Ca, calcite.

The prefix from the Greek παρα for “near” alludes to the relationship to tobermorite.
