Paulscherrerite

A monoclinic uranium hydroxide of the schoepite subgroup — named for physicist Paul Scherrer.

Intro adapted from Wikipedia (CC BY-SA).

Paulscherrerite is an IMA-recognized mineral species in the oxides & hydroxide class, with the chemical formula (UO₂)(OH)₂.

It crystallizes in the orthorhombic crystal system.

Key properties: specific gravity 6.66; Yellow streak.

IMA symbol Psc, IMA status: approved, named in 2008.

A dehydration product of metaschoepite.

It is found associated with Metaschoepite, β-uranophane, weeksite, spriggite.

The mineral was named to honor the contributions of Swiss physicist Paul Scherrer (1890-1969) to mineralogy and nuclear physics. Formerly referred to as “dehydrated schoepite.”.
