Phosphosiderite

A hydrated iron phosphate named simply for phosphorus and iron.

Intro adapted from Wikipedia (CC BY-SA).

Phosphosiderite is an IMA-recognized mineral species in the phosphate class, with the chemical formula Fe³⁺(PO₄)·2H₂O.

It crystallizes in the monoclinic crystal system (space group P2_1/n). It is a member of the Phosphosiderite structural group.

Key properties: Mohs hardness 3.5–4; specific gravity 2.74–2.76; Vitreous to subresinous luster; optically biaxial.

IMA symbol Phsd, IMA status: approved, named in 1890.

Typically an alteration product of triphylite in zoned complex granite pegmatites; may be a component of soils; replacing bones or shells.

It is found associated with Triphylite, barbosalite, leucophosphite, laueite, huréaulite, strengite, turquoise.

The name comes from phosphorus and the Greek for iron in the composition.
