Prewittite

Prewittite is an IMA-recognized mineral species in the halide class, with the chemical formula KPb₁.₅ZnCu₆O₂(SeO₃)₂Cl₁₀.

It crystallizes in the orthorhombic crystal system (space group Pnnm).

Key properties: specific gravity 3.9; Brownish green streak; Vitreous luster; optically biaxial.

IMA symbol Pwt, IMA status: approved, named in 2002.

Formed by sublimation around a degassing volcanic fumarole.

It is found associated with Melanothallite, chloromenite, sophiite.

The mineral was named to honor Charles T. Prewitt (b. 1933) for his contributions to the crystal chemistry of minerals and planetary materials.
