Riesite

Riesite is an IMA-recognized mineral species in the oxides & hydroxide class, with the chemical formula TiO₂.

It crystallizes in the monoclinic crystal system (space group P2/c). It is a member of the Columbite structural group.

Key properties: specific gravity 4.37.

IMA symbol Rie, IMA status: approved, named in 2017.

Occurs as complete or partial replacement of rutile clasts trapped in a shock-melt vein in a xenolith of garnet-sillimanite in suevite. Riesite forms by transformation from akaogiite upon release from the shock state.

It is found associated with Majorite-rich garnet, stishovite, jadeite-rich clinopyroxene, akaogiite.

The name is taken from the type locality.
