Rippite

Rippite is an IMA-recognized mineral species in the silicate class, with the chemical formula K₂(Nb,Ti)₂(Si₄O₁₂)O(O,F).

It crystallizes in the tetragonal crystal system (space group P4bm).

Key properties: Mohs hardness 4–5; specific gravity 3.17; White streak; Vitreous luster; optically uniaxial.

IMA symbol Rip, IMA status: approved, named in 2016.

Found in calciocarbonatites in an alkaline ultramafic complex.

It is found associated with Calcite, fluorcalciopyrochlore, tainiolite, fluorapatite, fluorite, Nb-rich rutile, olekminskite, K-feldspar, Fe-Mn-dolomite, quartz, goethite.

The mineral was named to honor German Samuilovich Ripp (b. 1935), an expert on carbonatite petrogenesis.
