Rudenkoite

Rudenkoite is an IMA-recognized mineral species in the silicate class, with the chemical formula Sr₃Al₃.₅Si₃.₅O₁₀(OH,O)₈Cl₂·H₂O.

It crystallizes in the monoclinic crystal system.

Key properties: Mohs hardness 1.5; specific gravity 3.17; optically biaxial.

IMA symbol Rd, IMA status: approved, named in 2003.

Formed in the last stages of (metasomatic) prehnitization, in garnet-wollastonite metamorphic rock (skarn) at the contact between pegmatite and calcite marble.

It is found associated with Prehnite, calcite, spinel, diopside, fluorapatite.

The mineral was named to honor Professor Sergey Alexandrovich Rudenko (1917-1992), a specialist in minerals of alkaline pegmatites, St. Petersburg (Leningrad) Mining Institute, Russia.
