Sarcopside

Sarcopside is an IMA-recognized mineral species in the phosphate class, with the chemical formula Fe²⁺₃(PO₄)₂.

It crystallizes in the monoclinic crystal system (space group P2_1/a). It is a member of the Olivine-Sarcopside structural group.

Key properties: Mohs hardness 4; specific gravity 3.79; Silky to waxy luster; optically biaxial.

IMA symbol Sar, grandfathered status — known before the IMA’s founding, named in 1868.

Formed along with graftonite, probably by exsolution from triphylite, in complex zoned granite pegmatites.

It is found associated with Graftonite, vivianite, huréaulite, triphylite.

Its name comes from the Greek for flesh and view, in allusion to its supposed flesh-red color [due to intimate intergrowth with graftonite].
