Sharyginite

Sharyginite is an IMA-recognized mineral species in the oxides & hydroxide class, with the chemical formula Ca₃TiFe₂O₈.

It crystallizes in the orthorhombic crystal system (space group Pmc2_1). It is a member of the Perovskite, Brownmillerite structural group.

Key properties: Mohs hardness 5.5–6; specific gravity 3.943; Brown streak; Sub-metallic luster.

IMA symbol Syg, IMA status: approved, named in 2017.

Found in thermally metamorphosed limestone xenoliths in alkali basalt (Germany and Austria) or ignimbite (North Caucasus), in pyrometamorphic rocks (Israel), and metacarbonate rocks in burned dumps from coal mining (Donetsk basin).

It is found associated with Fluorellestadite, cuspidine, brownmillerite, rondorfite, larnite, chlormayenite-wadalite, rankinite, magnesioferrite, perovskite, fluorite.

The mineral was named to honor Victor Victorovich Sharygin (b.1964), Sobolev Institute of Geology and Mineralogy, Novosibirsk, Russia.
