Shattuckite specimen

Shattuckite , Malachite Locality: Kaokoveld Mine, Kaokoveld Plateau, Kunene Region , Namibia ( Locality at mindat.org ) Size: 5.6 x 3.3 x 3.1 cm. Here you have a pocket lined with robins-egg blue shattuckite, probably pseudomorphed after malachite, with botryoidal form. There is a secondary growth of crystallized, fibrous malachite that adds a pretty color accent. — Photo: Robert M. Lavinsky · CC BY-SA 3.0

Shattuckite

A deep-blue copper silicate forming velvety fibrous masses — often intergrown with malachite and plancheite.

Intro adapted from Wikipedia (CC BY-SA).

Shattuckite is an IMA-recognized mineral species in the silicate class, with the chemical formula Cu₅(SiO₃)₄(OH)₂.

It crystallizes in the orthorhombic crystal system (space group Pcab).

Key properties: Mohs hardness 3.5; specific gravity 4.11; Silky luster; refractive index 1.783; optically biaxial.

IMA symbol Sha, IMA status: approved, named in 1915.

Found as a secondary mineral in oxidized copper deposits.

It is found associated with Chrysocolla, a joite, malachite, quartz, hematite.

The name is taken from the type locality, the Shattuck mine, Bisbee, Arizona, USA.
