Shirozulite
Shirozulite is an IMA-recognized mineral species in the silicate class, with the chemical formula KMn²⁺₃(Si₃Al)O₁₀(OH)₂.
It crystallizes in the monoclinic crystal system (space group C2/m).
Key properties: Mohs hardness 3; specific gravity 3.2; optically biaxial.
IMA symbol Szu, IMA status: approved, named in 2001.
Found in a strata-bound Mn ore deposit developed during regional low-P/T and contact metamorphism.
It is found associated with Tephroite, rhodochrosite, apatite, baryte, bementite.
The mineral was named to honor Dr. Haruo Shirozu, Professor Emeritus of Kyushu University, for his contributions to the crystal-chemistry of sheet-silicate minerals, particularly the chlorite group.
