It crystallizes in the hexagonal crystal system (space group P31c). It is a member of the Spangolite structural group.

Key properties: Mohs hardness 2; specific gravity 3.13–3.14; Pale green streak; Vitreous luster; optically uniaxial.

IMA symbol Spg, grandfathered status — known before the IMA’s founding, named in 1890.

A rare secondary mineral found in the oxidization zone of hydrothermal copper deposits.

It is found associated with Cuprite, connellite, brochantite, chalcophyllite, cyanotrichite, linarite, caledonite, clinoclase, azurite, malachite, aurichalcite, chrysocolla.

The mineral was named to honor Norman Spang (1842–1922), Etna, Pennsylvania, USA, American mineral collector, who provided the original specimen.
