Suzukiite

Suzukiite is an IMA-recognized mineral species in the silicate class, with the chemical formula BaV⁴⁺Si₂O₇.

It crystallizes in the orthorhombic crystal system.

Key properties: Mohs hardness 4–4.5; specific gravity 4; Pale green streak; Vitreous luster; optically biaxial.

IMA symbol Suz, IMA status: approved, named in 1978.

Found in massive rhodonite-rhodochrosite ores of a bedded manganese deposit, formed in very weakly metamorphosed Triassic cherts.

It is found associated with Quartz, barite, alabandite, nagashimalite, rhodonite, rhodo chrosite, barian roscoelite.

The name refers to Dr. Jun Suzuki (1896–1970), petrologist and mineralogist, Professor at Hokkaido University, Sapporo, Japan.
